Large format brass barrel gun sighting telescope by well known makers W Ottway & Co of Ealing. This model is dated 1917 and includes its original protective wooden carry case including stencilled inscription on the inside.

Primarily of tubular brass and precision machined brass construction, the sighting telescope works like a conventional telescope but includes reticle referencing pattern for aiming on the selected target.

The main body is equipped with a smaller tube on the top allowing for a light source to be added if required in low light situations.

The telescope is a substantial and heavy piece of equipment offered in used condition including rub marks and wear to black painted parts and marks to its protective case. Please carefully study our high resolution photographs for condition.

W Ottway & Co was established in 1840 at Orion Works, Ealing in London. By the late 19the century they were well established opticians manufacturing a wide range of different instruments including 'Naval and Military Gunsighting, Telescopes, Theodolites, Tacheometers, Levels, Miners' Dials, Prismatic Compasses, Heliographs, Equatorials, Driving Clocks, Filar Micrometers, Coelostats, Transits, Mirrors, Flats, Naval, Military and Astronomical Telescopes, Prismatic Binoculars, Sextants, Auto Collimators, Star Image Collimators, Focometers, Clinometers, Clinometer Testing Instruments, Spectrometers, Spectroscopes, Ships' Electric Logs, Workshop Microscopes and Optical Measuring Tools, Brass Copper and Nickel Silver Mandrel Drawn Tubes.'

They were contractors for the Admiralty, War Office, India Office, Crown Agents for the Colonies.

The company was one of the first factories to be bombed by German aircraft on the night of 28 September 1940, causing fire and damage to the property in Ealing.
