Vintage Sony Portable transistor radio Model 2FA-24W FM Radio with Automatic Tuning. Premium innovation with wicked styling, made in Japan in the mid 1960’s, seriously well designed cool tech/industrial design long before Apple was conceived!

If there were two cultural icons of the mid-60s it was the Beatles and James Bond. A number of Sony gadgets made an appearance in the Bond movie You Only Live Twice (1967) including this model, mounted on the dashboard of the ground breaking Toyota GT2000.

Sony’s 1965 Period advertising described the radio in glowing terms -

Automatic push-button tuning is only one of the advanced features of the Sony 2FA-24W. At the push of a tuning button, it seeks the next station and locks in... push the button half-way down, undesired stations are passed over for quick selection. With 11 transistors and telescoping antenna it will pick up even transmissions with exceptional fidelity.

Advertised at the significant price of fifty dollars in magazines and newspapers.

This example is in good original condition, still includes its telescopic antenna and Sony branded protective travel case with instructions. We tested the radio with hearing aid batteries available to hand, it fired up immediately, we listened to BBC coverage of the Reading Festival and a Classical Music station.

Sold as collectors piece for display with no guarantee or warranty, if the correct batteries are installed we see no reason why the radio shouldn’t work but we offer no warranty.
