Vintage 20thC hand made Japanese Kabuki theatre character in traditional costume (Kabuki theatre was at its height in popularity throughout the Edo Period 1603-1868).
The doll represents Renshishi ‘The Lion Dancer’ a larger than life part typically played by men through the centuries. This doll features a female character interpretation representing the lion cub, in full dance costume, chosen from a scene where the young cub’s courage is being tested by its father. The melodic joyful dance celebrates the child’s coming of age and ultimate display of bravery.
The bold hand made costume is constructed in silk following traditional design, the doll stands on an ebony coloured plinth base within a framed glass display case with wooden plaque.
A fabulous display piece offered in good condition.
