First edition unique composition including original illustrations. A work of fantasy fiction from renowned novelist Marie Corelli who might be regarded as an early eco warrior. This first edition is illustrated with ghoulish tipped-in colour plates from artist Arthur Severn. The pages of this work are designed to look smoke stained and produce the aroma of burning motor oil!

Marie Corelli was a British novelist who enjoyed a period of great success from the publication of her first novel in 1886 until the First World War, when her reputation became tarnished as a consequence for her successful conviction for the offence of food-hoarding.

This was the author's humorous and creative campaign against the motor car. Produced in collaboration with painter Arthur Severn, an artist and friend of John Ruskin.

Presented in the publisher's original red cloth binding with gilt title lettering to the spine and upper cover with further scroll design to upper cover blocked in black and gilt, outer now soiled and watermarked to front and rear, split to spine, bumped edges. Pages generally clean, two with tears, two detached, illustrations present .

Now more than 100 years old, a rare publication.
