The Artist and the Country House.
A HISTORY OF COUNTRY HOUSE AND GARDEN VIEW PAINTING 1540-1870
Revised edition by John Harris
The tradition of country house and garden view painting, or 'estate portraiture', began in the sixteenth century and was based upon Continental precedents.
In this comprehensive volume, which has now been revised to include much new information, John Harris studies the growth of the tradition in Britain and Ireland up to the mid Victorian period and illustrates a remarkable variety of the paintings which he discusses.
View painting, by virtue of its subject matter, embraces many other genres; and the author examines the various relationships with landscape and marine painting, human portraiture, sporting pictures and architectural drawing.
Each chapter consists of an introductory text which gives an historical account of the emergence of the many artists who contribute to the tradition.
The author concentrates upon the artist's life and career and focuses particularly on that which is distinctive in his work. Sometimes an artist is unknown and one is left with the enigma, for example, of the genius of the Dixton harvesters.
The illustrations follow, arranged in the form of a catalogue, with full details of the dimensions, media and dates of the paintings, including the collections in which they can be found.
A brief history of each house deals particularly with any unusual architectural features that are brought out in the painting.
Over four hundred works have been brought together; some well known, others never before published. Their juxtaposition provides not only intriguing comparisons for the architectural historian but also invaluable information for students of painting and garden topography.
A fabulous publication that helps paint an insightful impression of the Country House over three centuries.
