Meiji period (1868-1912) Isho tansu (clothing chest) from the Sendai region of Japan. Comprising red lacquer Sugi (cedar) frame and Keyaki (elm) front drawers in original mellow honey finish. A wonderful period piece distinguished by its elaborate lotus detail black back plates and scrolling vine iron locks. This configuration includes a practical bottom safe with original key and three red lacquer compartment drawers within and a very clever hidden secret drawer.
