Large antique Japanese Kuruma tansu (wheeled chest) in Sakura finish, based on similar designs this item is estimated to date from the late Meiji/Showa period. An interesting provincial hand made piece which has been carefully used and cherished by its past owners, developing a unique aged patina.
Back during the period of production, densely populated towns and cities and houses built exclusively of wood meant house fires were once very common in Japan.
Kuruma tansu were used for storage of clothing, bedding, swords and personal belongings. In the event of fire home owners could quickly wheel the tansu outside to the safety of the street.
They proved so popular that they were banned for part of the 19thC because they caused traffic jams, impeding fire fighters from saving buildings.
Comprising of versatile arrangement of 6 drawer format (one long drawer, 5 short drawers of various sizes) with opening door revealing two more internal drawers for smaller items. Original authentic forged and pressed metal decorative embellishment details in black including drawer pulls, protective edges and corners, stirrup carry handle to each end. This piece includes its original removable external wooden locking bar. This piece is raised on wooden wheels for movement. 
All drawers are clean and free moving, the tansu can be easily relocated, wheels rotate freely. No keys present. 
An authentic piece and interesting talking point with a versatile practical use.
