Large antique Japanese Karuma tansu (wheeled chest), based on similar designs this item is estimated to date from the Edo/Meiji period. An interesting provincial hand made piece which has been used and cherished by its past owners, developing a unique aged patina.
Back during the period of production, densely populated towns and cities and houses built exclusively of wood meant house fires were once very common in Japan.
Karuma tansu were used for storage of clothing, bedding, swords and personal belongings. In the event of fire home owners could quickly wheel the tansu outside to the safety of the street.
They proved so popular that they were banned for part of the 19thC because they caused traffic jams, impeding fire fighters from saving buildings.
This particular example is a historic marriage of convenience, combining two antique tansu chest designs. The upper chest has two long drawers behind equal barn doors with iron strapwork details and central roundel in iron. The lower chest has a selection of 5 drawers including original ironmongery, raised on wooden wheeled base. One of the smaller drawers is shorter in depth, a secret wooden box for valuables is hidden behind. 
This item has undergone various repairs and modifications over years, signs of historical woodworm (precautionary worm treatment thoroughly and liberally applied).
All drawers are clean and free moving, the tansu can be easily relocated, wheels rotate freely.
