By Christopher Gilbert

Published to mark the 75th Anniversary of the National Art-Collections Fund.

Including some 700 items this large and important work provides a carefully researched and lavishly illustrated survey of furniture at the two celebrated country house museums maintained by Leeds City Council and is the first publishing venture sponsored jointly by the National Art-Collections Fund and the Leeds Art Collections Fund, both of whom have contributed handsomely to the purchase of many splendid masterpieces.

The main strength of the collection is elite English 18th century furniture, much of which was commissioned for great houses now destroyed. Temple Newsam also harbours many excellent Tudor and Stuart pieces, including an important holding of regional oak furniture, while Lotherton Hall contains an impressive array of well documented Victorian masterpieces (several with royal connections) well supported by carefully chosen items associated with fashionable cabinetmakers and designers.

An incredible resource including makers marks and clues to the identification of original source.
