The year is 1816, the view shows Liverpool ‘Town’ from Seacombe, a ward in the district of Wallasey, Merseyside. Seacombe is on the edge of the River Mersey and positioned at one of the narrowest points in the river.

The artist was marine and portrait painter John P. Jenkinson of Liverpool and this slightly later engraving was created in 1820 by T. Dixon. His paintings can be found in the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool, and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston.

Published by Henry Fisher, Caxton, Liverpool, Nov 13th 1820.

This framed, hand coloured engraving is more than 200 years old and still holds all its original detail and much of its original colour.

The print has historic vertical creasing and foxing to the border, please note frame damage to the top rail of the frame.

64cm x 38cm overall frame size.

If you look closely you will notice a single steam powered vessel far right whilst locals still move produce with horse and cart along the foreshore.

A great piece for anyone with interest in maritime history, Liverpool or Merseyside local history and considerably easier to hang than the original artwork which over 8 feet wide! The Government Art Collection includes a copy of this engraving, acquired in 1976 for the nation.
