Extra large vintage Japanese Kokeshi Dolls, sold individually.

Genuine Japanese solid wood artisan turned hand painted pieces, each design is different and unique to the artisan who created it.

Kokeshi Dolls originated in North-East Japan primarily as wooden toys for children. Production commenced towards the end of the Edo period (1603~1868) by woodwork artisans, called Kiji-shi, who historically made bowls, pitchers, cups and other tableware by using a foot operated lathe.

Kokeshi became popular collectors pieces around the world following WW2 when military personnel returned home and resulting from increased tourism in the following decades.

Each design is unique to the artisan who created the doll, typically signed or stamped by the artist on the underside.

Extra large vintage examples are rare due to their high original cost, compared smaller versions.

These dolls are wonderful stand out pieces. Sold individually, please message with your selection. Sold dolls will be updated on the list below.
