Abel William Bahr was a coal merchant and general importer born in China to a German Civil Servant, he became an influential collector of Chinese art, presenting his first exhibition in Shanghai in 1908. He later moved to England but continued to develop his collection and knowledge through frequent trips to China. Much of his collection was purchased by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Finish born Oswald Siren was an excellent choice for this publication, formerly a Swedish art historian Siren he became one of the pioneers of Chinese Art scholarship in the West.
