Daruma Doll - Japanese Folk Art Piece - 7’’. This listing is for one doll.

Daruma Doll collectible/display piece.

The Daruma doll (達磨 daruma), also known as a Dharma doll, is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. These dolls, though typically red and depicting a bearded man (Dharma), vary greatly in color and design depending on region and artist. Though considered an omocha, meaning toy, by some, Daruma has a design that is rich in symbolism and is regarded more as a talisman of good luck to the Japanese. Daruma dolls are seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, making them a popular gift of encouragement/ good luck.

This Daruma is made in Japan by the traditional method of papier-mâché, round in shape, hollow and weighted at the bottom so that they will always return to an upright position when tilted over.

The Daruma eyes are blank when sold, the recipient of the doll colours-in one eye with a waterproof pen upon setting a target / personal goal, then they colour-in the other upon fulfilling the personal goal. Every time they see the one-eyed Daruma it helps the person to recall their goal.
