The North Prospect of Westminster Abbey, hand coloured original line engraving copper print c1710 on slightly textured, medium, white wove paper, engraved by the talented James ‘John’ Collins (active works 1680 - 1710) executed in the style of Johannes Kip.
Framed under glass with mount this quality architectural engraving is presented in good condition and could be an interesting focal point of any room. George III, King of Great Britain, 1738-1820 once owned a copy of this exact print.
James Collins was a draughtsman and skilled line engraver of topographical and architectural views, for at least part of his career he was based at Lynsted near Sittingbourne, Kent and London. His portfolio includes engravings of Westminster Abbey, Lincoln Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, and views of Rochester and Chatham Dock. Collins worked on commissions for printsellers and booksellers and published his own prints.
Thanks to the expertise and endeavours of Collins and his contemporaries we enjoy the benefit of incredibly detailed ‘architectural views’ and depictions of many of the finest and most important buildings of the period and earlier times.
