Freestanding hardwood fixed shelf bookcase designed, manufactured and sold under the CC41 Controlled Commodity scheme introduced during WW2.

This sturdy open front bookcase offers generous storage on 5 fixed shelves. Solid wood side panels have a quarter round front edge and slots to receive the solid wood shelves which are glued in place. The bookcase has a hardboard back and an upstand rail at top.

Created by a team of designers who took inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement the CC41 scheme and accompanying mark was introduced by the British government during the Second World War as part of a wider effort to control the use of raw materials and ensure essential goods remained available and affordable to the public. Utility furniture, produced under this scheme from 1942, was designed to be functional, economical, and durable. Due to limited timber supplies the government restricted the use of decorative veneers and eliminated unnecessary ornament.
