Framed antique or early vintage watercolour painting of the Chillon Castle on Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
Chillon Castle is Switzerland's most visited historic monument and a popular subject for artists, including J.M.W. Turner, Gustave Courbet, and James Duffield Harding. Many artists took inspiration from previous work, recreating their own unique twist.
The painting depicts a rowing boat in the foreground, fisherman’s boat in the distance, the castle rising majestically above choppy waves and spray on the lake, a scene also found in an engraving by James Duffield Harding.
The castle was famous for its dungeons, which held the "Prisoner of Chillon", a prior of Geneva, in the 16th century.
The work is likely from the late 19th or early 20th century, no signature present.
Framed in old-gold coloured moulded frame with glass and mount.
