A history of the uniforms of the British Army Volume 2 by Cecil C.P. Lawson published 1961, reprinted 1963.
VoL. II: From 1715 to 1760
MR. LAWSON, well known for his studies of military subjects and "battle-pieces", has undertaken the task of writing the first full account of British Military uniform, and this History will become the standard work on the subject. All branches of the Army-horse, foot, artillery, supply, regulars and volunteers-are dealt with; exact details of dress and equipment and their development from reign to reign are given in both the very attractive drawings and in the descriptive text.
Volume II deals with the uniforms of the armies of George I and II up to 1760. Not only are there drawings of the types of various units of cavalry and infantry, but charts are given showing the regiments composing the armies of 1742 and 1750, with their distinctive lace patterns, facings, etc.
The housings of the cavalry are also represented besides being described in the Royal Warrant of the time. A description is given of the regiments raised for the '45. A section is devoted to saddlery, with sketches of bits, bridles, etc.
The influence of the early colonial wars on military dress is exemplified in the description of the Light infantry companies formed during the campaigns in America. Fresh details of the independent companies later to be regimented as the Black Watch appear in the section on Scottish Regiments, which also deals with the uniforms and colours of regiments serving in the French and Dutch armies. The Royal Engineers have their own section and their first uniform on becoming part of the Regular Army is given.
The part played by the sutleress in the armies of this time and the probable origin of the gay dress adopted by vivandières of later years is described and illustrated by eighteenth century pictures. A section is devoted to an outline of the Hanoverian regiments. Notes on saluting and ceremonial, with appendices of clothing warrants, inspection returns of general officers, etc., conclude the volume.
