Stunning 19thC Victorian carved oak ‘Green Man’ hall stand with integral seat and dual stick/umbrella stands. A grand hall piece in natural oak.
Quality medieval design folk style carving adorns all room facing sides including foliate patterns, medieval lions, North Wind Green Man and shaker style turned pegs. The stick stand radiused right angle returns are particularly praiseworthy.
Consisting of carved arched pediment, bevelled edge mirror centred between carved pierced flanks with turned shaker style pegs, seat with drawer beneath incorporating well executed North Wind Green Man drawer pull. Carved right angle elbow supports forming swept stick/umbrella stand, stand is raised on legs and panels.
The exact origins of ‘Green Man’ carving are unknown but examples dating back to Roman times have been found. Here in the U.K. the carving of Green Man faces in wood and stone on buildings and furniture became popular during the 1100’s. Since then the enduring popularity of this art form has become interwoven with mythology, the love of the countryside and our fascination with medieval Britain.
A wonderful focal point for hallway/ reception with the added benefit of a practical seat for comfortable shoe removal.
