Piccadilly Looking Toward the City, typical street scene C1840.

This is a later reprint of a lithograph titled ‘Piccadilly, Looking Towards the City’, created by British artist Thomas Shotter Boys and published in 1842 as plate seventeen of his work ‘Original Views of London As It Is.’

The view looks east along Piccadilly from the corner of Old Bond Street which is clearly noted.

The original works were significant as they were the first English books to use chromolithography, a method of colour printing which endured for decades.

The foreground of the image features roadworks, with workmen digging up the street to lay large drains.

Notable buildings visible include Burlington House, with the spire of St James's Church also in view. Egyptian Hall at right, Patent Office on Old Bond Street at left. Installation of water system is shown at right.

Note the people looking up at two balloons in the sky, the street seller and special note - the armed soldier!

The print captures the atmosphere of a flourishing and powerful London metropolis in the mid-19th century.

Overall size 51.5cm x 39cm

This is a vintage reproduction print printed 1950 onwards, presented in a 19thC Hogarth ebony and gold frame.
