Splendid example, 19thC Secretaire Abattant in attractive flame mahogany.
Incredibly practical antique furniture solution perfect for home working thanks to the generous drop leaf writing surface. When the drop leaf is closed this handsome piece occupies a very modest footprint whilst providing a generous volume of practical storage. This well designed item also includes a large secret compartment on the top, accessed by lifting the top which is hinged to the rear and includes original brass stay.
The fitted writing area includes pigeon holes and drawers of various sizes, the drop leaf includes its original leather skiver and two radius stays in brass. The lower section has two panelled doors opening to reveal useful cupboard space with single shelf raised on plinth base. No original keys are present.
This quality piece includes locks by Joseph Bramah. In 1784, Joseph Bramah designed a round lock mechanism operated by a tubular key, of such complexity and security, that he put it in his shop window and offered a reward of 200 guineas to anyone who could open it. In 1851, at the Great Exhibition in London, A.C Hobbs an American locksmith spent 52 hours spread over 16 days and claimed the prize, but the method and spirit under which it was claimed is commented on by the London Times under the heading of 'the Great Lock Controversy
This previously used and well cared for piece includes historical repair to veneer adjacent to the left hand radius arm fixing point, minor scratches, small indents and marks consistent with normal use. Good solid condition throughout, polished ready for immediate placement and use.
