Genuine early vintage glazed earthenware Saki cask. During the Japanese Edo period, rural sake brewers needed a method of transporting their brew to the large cities. These large glazed casks were the perfect solution because they could be carried on pack horses or transported on special ships called taru kaisen. Until the 1940’s, they continued to be used to dispense draft sake in shops. Customers would come into the shop with their own smaller ceramic bottles and have them refilled with their favorite brand. This is a good vintage example with original stopper top, bamboo wrapped handle and cork tap stopper. Brewers details and decoration to the front and rear of the earthenware cask. A rare find, highly collectible and very decorative. Height - 15” Diameter - 10” £195.00 including postage to U.K. zone 1 addresses. For postage costs to addresses outside U.K. zone 1 and overseas postage please enquire prior to placing your order thank you.
