Celtic cords/knots originated in Northern Italy and Southern Gaul and were widely interpreted during the Roman occupation. They were introduced into Ireland in the 7thC and were reinterpreted in Ireland, Wales and Scotland over the centuries

Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing.
