Collection of 4 professional antique Japanese photographs relating to Naval vessel Yakumo.

Comprising of 2 photographs relating to a Japanese Navy Sailor, 1 photograph of possibly the same individual serving in the Shimobryaku City Harbour Army and one of the Yakumo.

Yakumo was an armored cuiser bullt for the Imperial Japanese Navy un late 1890’s.

At the time of design Japan didnt have the capability to build modern war ships. Ordered 6 armoured civisers all built overseas - these became known as SIx - Six Fleet.

4 were built in the UK by Armstrong Whitworth, 1 built in Germany and one built in France.

All six had British Guns which were standardised across the Japanese Navy.

A crew of 670 manned the Yakumo.

Yakumo - ordered 1 Sept 1897 built by AG Vulcan, Germany launched 8 July 1899, completed 20 June 1900.

Yokosuka, Japan 30 Aug 1900.

During her lifetime she was also used as a coastal protection vessel, later reverting back to cruiser duties and designation.

1904-1905 Active service in the war with Russia.

1939-1945 Various operational roles in WW2.
