Thought to be a hand carved deity representing one of 7 Japanese Shinto gods - Fukurokuji (the lucky god of wisdom and longevity). Carved from marble this piece was probably once placed in a home shrine (Kamidana). In earlier times pieces like this might have been carried for worship when traveling or visiting relatives (Similar pieces of a smaller size in wood or ivory (Netsuki) were worn or carried on the person for good luck and as a display of wealth).
